hey. I'm Kim Rasmussen aka Mrs. R

I am a former 8th grade Algebra teacher here in the Sun City.

And one thing I have noticed is that the main thing that holds students back more than anything is their attitude about math.

Your 8th grader could believe there is something wrong with them since math doesn't come easy anymore.

Having to work at it, does not make math the enemy.

Typically, they have always been good at math and then in Algebra, they hit a wall, and math is challenging for the first time.

Since they were good at math, they didn't needed to work at it. Now it is challenging.

Students who believed they can learn and do the math are the ones who succeed, no matter the obstacles.

GT and Advanced Students need support

I have taught 100's of 8th grade Algebra students. Gifted and Talented and advanced math students also need direct instruction and encouragement.

They have a variety of learning styles and traits that, if not addressed, makes math boring. I make learning fun.

I'm Bad at Math

If I heard the statement, "I'm just bad at math" once, I heard it a thousand times. In fact, the students were the ones who struggled the most. Not because they are bad at math but because they believe they are bad at math and tell themselves this over and over.

The students who believe they can figure it out and that they can be good at math have totally different experiences.

Many of my students come to sessions feeling defeated and want to shut down (until I help them our of it of course) because they are so frustrated. They don't feel prepared to do their math assignment. It's not like any of the examples. So they blame the person who "discovered math". His name is Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi  by the way... He was a Persian mathematician.

So Let Me Tell You What I Am Offering!

I run a study group preparing 8th graders for the Algebra EOC. In each group session, your child learns the micro skills needed do the math, of course, and how recognize the different types of problems that will show up and what strategies to use depending on the types of problems.

But, more importantly, in these sessions, your child will come to believe in themselves no matter what thoughts are currently holding them back. This translates to confidence before, during and after the EOC.

Your 8th grader will be able to ask questions whether ahead of time or during the session. Each student will be able ask questions and feel safe doing it, anonymously even if they want. The students in the study group will also be invited to answer questions.

Get on the waiting list so I can keep you informed of when we start and everything you'll want to know leading into testing time.
